CompTIA is revising and re-consolidating their flagship entry-level exam, the A+. We anticipate that the 2009 exam versions will be released some time in August (no firm date yet, but we’ll post it here as soon as we know it). The NEW exams will be:

Meanwhile, the existing 2006 A+ exams (220-601, -602, -603, -604) will remain available to test-takers until staggered dates in 2010.  As of Jan-12-2010, those dates are February 28, 2010 in the U.S., Canada and South Africa (English language version), and August 31, 2010 in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand (English language version). The educational versions of these exams (JK0-601, JK0-602, JK0-603 and JK0-604), as well as the German, Korean, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese translations of the 220-601 through 220-604 CompTIA A+ exams, will remain in the market for use until August 31, 2010.

If you’ve been studying the 2006 objectives, you can take those exams before your country’s expiration date and have a valid, current certification.  If you were previously certified in A+ under the 2006 or earlier versions, you can take the all-in-one upgrade Bridge exam, BR0-003, to re-certify under the 2009 objectives.

We’re busy developing our own practice exams for the 220-70* exams — look for those in the third quarter of the year.

ETA 9/30/09: The new release dates for our practice exams are October 25 for 220-701 and November 6 for 220-702.

  1. Whats the examination fee for the A+ exams and the N+ Separately?

  2. I can’t tell you that, but if you follow this link:
    http://www.comptia.org/certifications/testprep/testingcenters.aspx
and choose your testing center (Pearson Vue or Prometric), you can find out by doing a trial scheduling of the exam for your region. Thanks for reading!

  3. Hi There!

Do you have a release date for the CompTIA 701/702 practice products yet? We have a group of anxious studiers ready to go!

    Thank you!

    • Kate, here are the release dates (and we’re definitely on track to meet these):

      701 – Release 10/25
      702 – Release 11/6

On Friday we’re publishing the “What we’re working on” for the fall quarter, so you can get a complete overview of the pipeline. Thanks for reading!

  4. I just spoke with a sales associate from your company and she said that the exams are not yet available and she didn’t know when they would be. It is 11/30/09, which is past your deadline. A bit annoying that they are not available and that know one knows when they will be…

  5. What is the exact difference between 220-601 exam. vs. 220-701 exam?

    • Do you mean the difference in the exam content? The best way to figure that out is to look at the exam objectives for each test. You’ll have to log in to the CompTIA website, after which you can download a PDF of each exam’s objectives:

      http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a.aspx
      http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a/a2006.aspx

Difficulty-wise, they both are about the same (mostly knowledge-based questions).

Also, the CompTIA A+ 2006 Edition certification exam has three separate tracks, so whether you take the 701 or the 601 will depend on which version of certification you’re shooting for.

If you have more questions, don’t hestitate to ask.

  6. Hello,

I have heard that the exam 220-601 and the exam 220-701 are almost the same. What about the exam 220-702 and the 220-602?
Can you do the exam 220-702 if you have studied for the 220-601 and the 220-602?

I hope someone cna help me.

    Marijke

    • Marijke,

We can’t answer any questions about exam content. However, background concepts do not change. So if you’ve studied Concept X, and that concept is covered on both the 602 and 702 exam objectives, then you are prepared to answer questions about that concept, no matter which exam version you take.

I recommend that you go to CompTIA’s website and download the objectives lists for BOTH 702 and 602.

      http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a.aspx
      http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a/a2006.aspx

That will show you the additonal topics that were added to 702. If you spend some time focusing just on those changed objectives, you should be well prepared for your 702 exam. I hope this answer helps.
